Free chicken and coke.

Free Fonts (Ye Olde School Edition)

Say you’re puttering along, looking for a font of a peculiar style. An older style. Something with fun alchemy symbols that will help you really dress up your ode to your hidden AD&D years.

Have I got a site for you. Fontennium categorizes their fonts by geek fetish. Find your way through Sci-Tech, Celtic, Magic, Roman, and more to download free gems like Thor Regular and Satanick (which probably has something to do with an evil Santa Claus).

The site is load of fun for anyone who enjoys playing with the sometimes inconsistent and not so careful world of amateur typeface design.

Free Zombie Killing Music (Craigslist)

Okay, so the title only makes sense if you watched (and enjoyed) Shawn of the Dead, one of the funniest comedies to hit the theaters in years. If you have, then you’ll have a happy memory of Shawn and his buddy shuffling through crates of old albums trying to find disposable vinyl to toss at the zombies slowly shuffling toward the terrified duo.

Which had me rolling like you wouldn’t believe.

Now you can stock up on disposable albums for free, with the help of this offer coming from the Denver area on Craigslist:

FREE BOX OF ALBUMS. NEED GONE BY THIS WEEKEND. PLEASE EMAIL OF INTERESTED. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED.

For a dedicated audiophile, this probably leaves too many questions. What condition are the albums in? What does the selection look like? Is there anything in there that can be sold on Ebay for a ton of money? Fah! Looked at from the proper perspective, this is nothing other than a Zombie attack survival kit just waiting to be claimed.

So, what are you waiting for?

Free Player Piano (Craigslist)

Fancy a slightly broken, heavy as hell player piano for the lovely price of nothing but a little time and sweat? This Washington DC Craigslist post is for you:

This is one of those player pianos that you see in the movies with the scrolly thing in the middle. May need to be tuned. Scrolly thing does not work right now, but with effort can be repaired. I do not know what is wrong, this was given to me and I do not have the time to fix it. VERY HEAVY. It took 6 skinny guys to put it into the house. The piano is free, however you must move it. It must be gone by Sunday August 26. I will not hold for anyone. The first to show up with the truck and manpower gets it. Email for times and directions.

Free Car (Craigslist)

Craigslist for San Diego has this listing for a pair of free cars.

1987 Cadilac that needs love. All original. Lost title.

Buick Century runs fine has title.

Please respond to [See original listing for contact information.]

Now, as for me, I’m always a little leery of any car being sold or given away without a title. But a free Buick Century (in, I’m sure, rough condition) can’t be bad, can it?

Free Magazines

B2B magazines don’t make money from subscriptions, they make money from ad revenue. Ad revenue comes when a magazine can prove that it has the audience that advertisers want--that’s where you come in. One of the perks of working your butt off to get into that management position is that you become the target audience for somebody.

To provide good, controlled circulation that drives ad revenue, B2B and professional magazines often offer free subscriptions to people willing to fill out short questionnaires about their company and job; if a person is high enough on the totem pole, works for the right kind of company, and controls enough budget, they’ll quality to receive the free subscription. For me, I have free subscriptions to a number of computer related and design related magazines. Frankly, I’m worth more as another number to drive ad revenue (that is in the thousands of dollars per page) than I am as a subscriber (which is, for even expensive magazines, rarely more than a hundred dollars a year).

What free reading material could you qualify for?

Check out Tradepub.com to find out.

Free Image Editor

image

Mac OS X users (both PowerPC and Intel) who want an easy to use image editor for free--in this case, “free” as in “open source"--should download Seashore.

Seashore’s developers based their development on GIMP, but gave it a Mac friendly interface. Not all of GIMP’s features are in place, so it doesn’t have the same level of sophisticaiton as GIMP, but it’s easy to install, perhaps a bit easier to use, and does have some features that pros would appreciate. Layers, merging effects, tablet support, and the ability to save to TIFFs (without which I wouldn’t be able to use the program to do my job).

It won’t work for everyone, but it’s worth a look.

Free Photos

Bloggers, designers, and business users alike can find much to love about stock.xchng, a resource for free photos. The variety is astounding, the quality ranges from reasonably good to not so hot, and there are a number of different agreements restricting usage for some of the photos.

It is user created content--that is, the photographers put the pictures on the site themselves--so designers looking to use these photos in commercial, public are should be careful which pictures they choose. As far as I can tell, there are no model releases available.

Warnings aside, there are a ton of decent pictures here that can be used for a variety of projects. I personally have used stock from this site for internal documents and presentations.

Welcome to the Freevangelical

I like free stuff and I’m relatively sure that you do, too. This site exists to bring you news of the free offers from around the Web--anything that I see that catches my fancy and free advice because I’m pushy that way.

What you won’t find as this site grows:

  1. Porn
  2. Free offers that force you to spam your friends
  3. Anything that violates copyright laws. No free music that hasn’t been released by the artist, no pdf downloads of books, no movies.

What you will find, though, could be better:
  1. Links to freeware sites
  2. Links to legitimate contests
  3. Links to giveaways and promotions open to the general public
  4. Interesting listings from Craigslist “Free” stuff from around the US
  5. Free advice for people gutsy enough to ask (and for some who didn’t realize they were asking)

So welcome to The Freevangelical. Enjoy the free stuff and feel free to send tips and suggestions to me--just use the email address listed in the left column of the site.
